Getting Personal Help at College by Alex

MiraCosta has ways to help students who are struggling outside of school.  These services include the food panty and health service. The health center offers student medical check ups and mental health counseling. College is the time where many students either become adults or are still getting used to being adults. At that stage in life someone new to being an adult might not understand the benefits of affordable health counseling. This applies for international students, students who are living with parents, and students facing hard times. Medical prices are much higher then they would expect so having the medical help on campus is great!

Food Pantry and the Service Learning Program

The food pantry helps in a similar way, while the food pantry is for students who can’t afford food, if a has forgotten their wallet, or just needs something fast. The pantry is based on donations and includes water battles ramen and canned food so also feel free to donate to help someone else out.  Service Learning gets students involved in the community so you can learn more about social services.

Mental health counseling is free for current students and gives you 50 minute sessions once a week for six weeks. When a student needs medical treatment or medicine, Health Services can help you find a doctor.

All medical and counseling records are confidential

Location of MiraCosta by Alex

The location of MiraCosta is very important to the students attending, while some might live close to the college, others live farther away and need transportation.Screen Shot 2017-10-11 at 4.24.04 PM

MiraCosta is located close to a train station and accessible by bus which allows for students from a farther distance to get to school. For students traveling by car the campus is located near highway 78 that travels east/west and highway I-5.  MiraCosta College sits right on top of an elevated region in Oceanside, California fairly close to the borders of neighboring cities Vista and Carlsbad.

Located on a hill means on most days you can see the ocean from campus from the cafeteria or art building for example. Also because of being close to the Pacific Ocean and in southern California the weather remains consistent, never having any major weather changes or issues.  Its mostly sunny even in the winter and we even have rain during the summer. Basically the location of MiraCosta lets many students meet and have a good time during all seasons.

Midterm tests can be stressful. Last week I finished my midterm tests for all my classes and I feel confident about them. As an experienced student, let me give you recommendations on how to prepare:

  • Always go to classes, its a lot easier to learn with someone who understands the course telling you whats important, and also allows you to ask questions. Some students don’t realize the difference of attending and not attending the classes. SO what do you do in class? —  listen, and take notes.  While everyone knows that taking notes is important, let me tell you a little secret, the more notes you take the less you have to read the text book.
  • So in that case why do you need a textbook, well sometimes you do not, but that is very rare. The value of a textbook is directly tied to the type of teacher some use lectures to add to the book, while some use the book to add to the lectures. figuring out what type of teacher you have is also important.
  • One personal tip for understanding teachers is look at quizzes or sample tests to figure out how they ask questions. Some teachers ask what date something took place while others might ask what took place on that date, by pinpointing what they will ask will let you determine what is important.
  • Last step is not to worry.  The more worried you are means they less prepared you are and you will have the tendency to make small mistakes that will add up. Doing bad on the midterm isn’t the end, most of the time, you still have the later half of the class and the final to catch back up and learn from your mistakes.

Alex from the U.S.

Hi, my name is Alex and I have been a student at Mira Costa College for 3 semesters. My major is engineering mostly due to being better at doing math than other subjects. My current goal is to finish all of my general classes required to earn an Associates Art degree before transferring. My hobbies include biking, cooking, and video games. Since coming to Mira Costa I’ve managed to join a club and make more friends than I thought I would.
