Learn about ELI from an International Student from Colombia

What is ELI?

The English Language Institute (ELI) is a full-time English language training program at MiraCosta College.   The program offers 8-week classes starting in January, March, June, August and October.  Classes meet 4 hours per day, 20 hours per week.  ELI provides international students the opportunity to increase their English language proficiency and develop the skills needed for success in a college or university in the United States. The program is designed for students with a minimum of one year English language training at high school or college level. Students must be at least 18 years old or live with a certified legal guardian near the college.  The program is fun and students learn a lot.

Diana, an international student from Columbia
  1. Please briefly introduce yourself
My name is Diana Monsalvo and I am from Colombia
  2. What made you choose MiraCosta College (MCC)?
I chose MiraCosta College because my family heard that it was a good institution for international students, they would help you and guide you through every step while you assist in the college
  3. What would be the most difficulty you have had while studying in the US?

Since I came here I’ve had a lot of obstacles, and one of them was the language. Because when I came here I could not speak English, it was really hard for me. I remember when I started my English program (ELI) all of my classmates could speak the language, so I felt so frustrated and I just wanted to go back to my country. However, the good thing was that my teachers were so dedicated with me. They put a lot effort on their classes so I could understand them. I feel so grateful to them because thanks to them my English went from 0 to 100. After 7 months attending ELI, I could understand and have a full conversation in English

  4. Have you ever studied anywhere else besides the US?
No, I have never studied in another country
  5. How did you learn English and prepare for studying abroad?
I learned English and I prepared myself in MiraCosta ELI program. Based on my experience, I can say that this program is the best. ELI instructors are wonderful, especially Zakia. She really put her time to teach me the language. It was amazing how she could do that. I really can tell how grateful I am, and how my English has been improved, since I started from that program
  6. What is your most favorite place at MCC? Please tell us three things you like about MCC
My favorite place is the Library. It is a great place to study and stay focused on your classes. Also, there are a lot of tutors who can help, which is wonderful for international students. I am studying in a country which your language is completely different, but it is great when I know that I get a lot of help from Student Resources at MiraCosta College, such as Writing Center, Math Learning Center, Tutoring and Academic Support Center, and Computer Science Lab. That makes it easier and gives us more confidence when studying
  7. How long have you attended MCC and what is your goal? Do you have a school that you want to attend?

I have been studied in MiraCosta College for 2 years, but this is my second semester as college student who officially takes credit classes. I spent a year attending ELI at MiraCosta. I don’t have yet any specific school I want to transfer to

  8. What is a piece of advice you have for new students?
My advice for the new students is: “Believe in yourself. In spite of all the changes that you will face – such as teachers, colleagues, freedom and new responsibilities in general – you must know that they are fears that everyone must face and that you will be able to overcome them with your inner strength”
  9. As a Columbian international student, what are the three interesting things about your country you would want us to know?

Our culture, food, and tradition are really three important components in my country which I am really proud of. I always share them with my new friends and classmates

  10. Is there anything you want to share to our readers?
MiraCosta is a really good institution, and if you are an MiraCosta international student like I am, you know that I am right. 😉

What is happening at UCLA

I just read the blog from UCLA admission office.  I was surprised by the number of undergraduate applications and what they look at in the application to decide who gets in.

I plan to apply to transfer to UCLA, UCSD, and UC Berkeley in one year.  Because I will complete all transfer requirements, I will be transferring into year 3 at the university.

I know there is a lot of competition to get into a good university, but I feel prepared.  Check out Xiaochen’s blog on how international students prepare for university transfer at MiraCosta College.

Meet South Korean Student at MiraCosta College

MiraCosta Community College (MCC) is known for its diversity with students coming from a lot of countries with different backgrounds in the world. Today we will meet Seunghoon Lee, one of the amazing South Korean students at MCC

me.jpg
Seunghoon Lee from South Korea

Please briefly introduce yourself
Hi my name is Seunghoon Lee and I am an international student from South Korea. I am majoring in computer science and planning to transfer to UC this year. This spring 2018 is my fourth and last semester in MCC.

What made you choose MiraCosta College (MCC)?
One of my Korean friends recommended MCC. He spoke highly of the courses as well as talented faculties in MCC. I searched the school on the Internet and I was able to find good reviews about MCC. Thus, I chose to attend here.

What would be the most difficulty you have had while studying in the US?
I believe most international students have some distress due to the language barrier. I also underwent those struggles. When I had to write essays or read text, I often got stuck due to the words or terms that I did not know in English, then, I had to look it up through the dictionary and this took up a quite amount of time and effort.

Have you ever studied anywhere else besides the US?
No, I graduated Anyang Foreign Language High School in Korea. Until then, I lived in Korea.

How did you learn English and prepare for studying abroad?
Luckily, I graduated from a specialized school and we had benefits learning other foreign languages. Among them, English was my favorite. Although it is uncommon in US, in Korea, most students attend private academies called “Hak-won”. I also attended Hak-won throughout my school years to enhance my English skills.

What is your most favorite place at MCC?
My favorite place in MCC is probably the Math Learning Center (MLC). As a computer science major, I especially had to take a lot of math courses and some of them were high division courses. MLC staffs and the tutors were extremely helpful and thanks to them, I was able to complete my math requirements without difficulties. Surprisingly, I am currently working at MLC as a student tutor and helping students who needs help with the courses that I took. For me, helping other students is a very rewarding job. Also at MLC, I made a lot of new friends who share similar worries and thoughts.

Please tell us three things you like about MCC
Three things I like about MCC :
1. It has competent faculty members. Most of the professors I met in MCC were very helpful and enthusiastic. They lead us to get to the next level. (I also heard from my friends who transferred to UC that you will have no problem adapting to UC if you are from MCC. )

2. It provides sufficient academic help that students can benefit from. There are STEM center if you need help with science, MLC for math and Writing Center if you need someone to review or check your work on the essay.
3. The counselors are always there for you. Since most students attend MCC in order to transfer to UC or CSU, the advice from the counselors are essential. On my first year in MCC, counselor and I set the academic plans that included the classes I needed to take in the next 3 semesters. Also last year, I attended UC workshop and a counselor who was from the Transfer Center helped me apply.

How long have you attended MCC and what is your goal? Do you have a school that you want to attend?
I have attended MCC starting from Fall 2016, so now is my second year in here. My future goal is to become a competent and helpful programmer who develops app that can make our lives more enjoyable. To achieve my goal, I first need to transfer to UC. I applied to UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD and UCI. Hopefully, I will be attending one of these schools by this fall.

What is a piece of advice you have for new students?
I am sure that you will enjoy attending MCC. International students! Don’t be afraid to make new friends. Especially if you feel lonely or homesick, those friends will help you feel much better.

As a South Korean international student, what are the three interesting things about your country you would want us to know?
As a South Korean international student, I would recommend you to have some interest in listening to K-POP. Also, as far as I know, there is a K-POP club in MCC. Join them! Besides listening to famous K-POP singers like BTS, I recommend listening to other unknown but talented musicians.
I have noticed Korean barbecue is famous among Americans and they seem to like it. However, in Korea, fried chicken is as popular as Korean barbecue. There are numerous flavors and styles of fried chicken. I have traveled in a quite many countries, but I never found fried chicken that is better than Korea. So, I strongly recommend you to try both in Korea.
Lastly, do you know where the 2018 winter Olympics is being held? It is in Korea! Pyeongchang Winter Olympics just began! I hope you give interest in Korea as well as the Olympics it self.

What does a student worker at MiraCosta College look like?

As an international student at MiraCosta College, you can work up to 19.5 hours/week. First of all, you have to be a full time student taking at least 12 units in the semester. Thus, even if you work at multiple departments, the total hours you can work in a week have to add up to no more than 19.5 hours. Besides submission of application in the departments and the hire package in Career Center, approval from International Office is required. I want to introduce my job as a Blogger/Student Outreach so that everyone who reads this blog would have an idea what it looks like to be a student worker at MiraCosta College.

An international student can get scholarships while attending MiraCosta College

Scholarship Celebration_2016_ - 16.jpg
A student getting scholarship award at MiraCosta College in 2016

As an international student, I initially thought that I would not be able to get a scholarship, because scholarships and financial aid seemed more available for the U.S residents and citizens. However, I did it!  I won a $1000 MiraCosta College scholarship in May 2017!!   I learned a lot from this experience, such that I have to read a lot to  find the available scholarships which I am eligible to apply.

MiraCosta scholarships are available to students who complete one semester and are continuing for another semester. I had to write an essay as a personal statement in which I described myself as how I deserved that scholarship. Basically, I answered two questions:

  • “What makes you different from the other candidates?”
  • “What makes you deserve this scholarship?”

Nhi Tran, from Vietnam, won $1000 Miracosta College Scholarship

Applying was easy. On the MiraCosta Scholarship webpage, I typed my student ID and SURF password.  I completed personal information, then uploaded a personal statement and my MiraCosta transcript.  The most important requirement was that I had to submit my transcript from the previous semester and showed them my future enrolled classes.  That means I needed to have at least one full semester at MiraCosta getting a certain minimum GPA (vary depending on each scholarship), and I will be enrolling for the next semester, because a lot of scholarship at MiraCosta are not transferable.

Scholarship Celebration at MiraCosta in 2016

There have been a lot of students winning the scholarships at MiraCosta College, and there are a lot of types of scholarships with different amount awarded. Gie, an international student from Malaysia, got 2017 annual scholarship which was $500 award. “I felt happy. The scholarship made my day,” said Gie

Gie Song Tan, from Malaysia, got 2017 annual scholarshipa at Miracosta College

Gie also shared some tips to the future candidates at MiraCosta that, “All you have to do is to get a good grade, put some effort writing, share your story and experience, you can seek help from Writing Center or even Scholarship office.” In personal statement, he wrote about the difficulties that he has experienced in the United States, his educational as well as career goals, and how the scholarship would help him. All of that helped him win the scholarship. MiraCosta has great financial resources available for students who attend this College. So why not apply when you need financial support? First, finish your first semester at MiraCosta College with a good GPA. Second, look for the scholarships that you are eligible to apply. Then go for it!

Nhi

Hello everyone!

My name is Nhi Tran,  people call me “Nee”. I am from Hue, Vietnam where originally delicious Bun Bo Hue (spicy beef noodle) comes from. I have been in California since December 2014, and started school at Miracosta College in the beginning of 2015. Besides school, I love playing basketball, listening to music, and singing. I enjoy living in California because I am in love with the weather and the diversity here. People come from a lot of countries all over the world bringing their own cultures and languages to make California diverse. Living in a new country teaches me how to live well independently, how to take care of myself, how to be organized on things and how to make friends. I hope I will have a wonderful time and be successful in the United States!
